Artist's Statement

November 28, 2011 - Revision 2
My work examines polarities inherent in human nature and analyzes the psychological struggle to achieve balance between them. With my paintings, I intend to illuminate the awkwardness of an inner conflict where two disparate ambitions exist in a situation where it is difficult or impossible to reconcile them. I am specifically concerned with the ubiquity of these contradicting desires, and the antagonism derived from them. Through my own system of symbols I aim to emphasize the anxiety of this struggle and question the compromises we make to appease them.
To further investigate the tension inherent in contradiction, I create ambiguous illusionistic space that visually suggests a blur between the boundary of tangible and psychological space. This blur imitates the awkwardness and complexity of conflicting impulses both intrinsic and acquired, and visually represents the contention of motives that I find intriguing.

My work examines polarities inherent in human nature and the psychological struggle to achieve balance between them. With my paintings, I intend to illuminate the awkwardness of an inner conflict where two disparate ambitions exist in a situation where it is difficult or impossible to reconcile them. I am interested in these contradicting desires and how opposites engage and interact. I focus on the antagonism created by this push and pull, and emphasize the anxiety derived from it. Although awkward, I find this struggle and the compromises we make to appease it very alluring.
My paintings are strongly influenced by the western canon and typically take the form of portraiture. The figures portrayed become tragic yet heroic representations of this inner battle.
Formally, I am interested in creating ambiguous illusionistic space to visually suggest a blur between the boundary of tangible and psychological space. This blur imitates the awkwardness and complexity I find intriguing in the venture to find balance in spite of opposing desires.
